Elected (Voting) NLS Board Members

Wendy Showalter

Greetings of peace and joy.

My name is Wendy Showalter and I have been elected to serve as your President.

Being born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota (the Land of the Lutherans), this position will certainly bring me to all parts of our country to nurture and pray for communities of believers as they seek to birth new secretariats.

Upon leaving my VdC weekend in 1992, my normal life was about to change. I was a single mom and felt disenfranchised from our home church. But God was about to give us a loving, earthly family like we had never known. Within this new environment, I served on numerous teams and in leadership roles. Within our secretariat, I served as Lay Director and Assistant, State Trainer and Metro District Director. I also led the charge to re-write our by-laws and restructure our community.

Then came my introduction to the National Lutheran Secretariat. At the inception of the Regional Coordinator program, I was quickly drawn to serve on the first R.C Team and then co-authored the Rediscover and Recommit Workshop. It has been my blessing to facilitate the workshop over a dozen times and interact with tremendous Cursillistas across all seven regions.

At the Annual Gathering of 2015, my blessings increased by being elected and serve as your Vice President of Outreach. Along with mentoring and guiding the birth of four new secretariats, I was able to visit our VdC sisters and brothers in Papua New Guinea, and reach out to the community in Bolivia.

God has blessed me with a wonderful husband, Jay, and together we have three great kids and two adorable grandchildren. We worship at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, in Maple Grove, MN, and are very active in various programs.

My professional life has helped me develop tools that I now bring to the new tasks at hand. After teaching English and Theater Arts at the senior high level, I went on to working over two decades in the advertising/marketing arena. We shall see how our Lord uses me now!

Blessed to serve you and our living Lord.

Wendy Showalter, President – National Lutheran Secretariat for Via de Cristo

Rev. Sue Beall
Spiritual Director

Greetings to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Via de Cristo has been a vital part of my ministry since I first attended a weekend in 1995, and I know and deeply appreciate what a precious gift it is to God’s work in the church and in the world. I look forward to serving with you as I serve on the National Lutheran Secretariat of Via de Cristo Board as Spiritual Director, getting to know you better as we work together growing spiritually and helping others grow spiritually as we serve Christ.

I am a retired Lutheran Pastor (ELCA). After my retirement, I served five years as an interim pastor for churches in the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod of the ELCA that were in the transition process. I served two terms on the Board of the Texas VdC Secretariat, and also on the Texas Gulf Coast VdC Board as Spiritual Director since its start-up in 2017.

I was married to Gordon Beall for 41 years until his death in 2002. We have two adult sons who are married and between them I have 6 grandsons.

My formal education includes a Certification in Spiritual Formation and Spiritual Direction, FIND Program for Training Spiritual Directors, Sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, 2015; Master of Divinity Seminary Program in the Southwest, Wartburg Seminary, 1994; Ph.D. in Health Education/Communication, Texas Woman’s University, Denton, Texas, 1976; M.A. in Kinesiology/Recreation, Texas Woman’s University, Denton, Texas, 1964; and a B.A. in Health & Kinesiology, Mary Hardin Baylor College, Belton, Texas, 1960.

God loves you and so do I. De Colores!

I attended Women’s Ohio Via de Cristo #64 in the fall of 2008, where I sat the the table of Priscilla. My husband and I attend Peace Lutheran Church in Gahanna when in Ohio and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Charlotte when in Florida. Karl and I have been married 46 years. We have three children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Karl and I spend time in Ohio (where the majority of our family is located), Florida (where Karl and I purchased a home two years ago), and Hawaii (where our daughter and one granddaughter live).

We have helped coordinate Ultreyas for the Central Ohio VdC community and I have been involved with many VdC weekends and two of the Clergy Experiences. Even though I have not held an office for our secretariat I have been involved since Karl has been the state Spiritual Director for Ohio Via de Cristo for the last several years.

Before retiring in February 2017, I was a Product Manager for the Treasury Management division of a regional bank and spent my entire career in the banking industry. In my spare time I enjoy incorporating a little humor with my puppets in children’s sermons and my Rollos, as well as crafting, woodworking, and depending on where we are, playing pickleball, swimming and hiking.

I am looking forward to working with the NLS Board for the coming year.

Lindsay Daugherty
VP of Outreach

Hello! My name is Lindsay Daugherty and I attended Eastern North Carolina Via de Cristo Mixed #69 in September 2009, where I sat at the table of John!

I attend Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church in Kannapolis, NC where I am so happy to have found my every growing family in Christ! It is through Kimball that I was introduced to Via de Cristo, and through both my home church and the Via de Cristo Ministry, I feel as if I have the piece of my family that I had once been missing! For this I am truly grateful! God is good!

I am a single mom to my two fur babies, Lilly and Lucky, my two very loved pooches! Lilly is 14 years old and Lucky 16!!! Together we have traveled across and up and down the US, hiking too many trails to count! Adventurous to say the least!

I am a yoga teacher and health and fitness coach. I am passionate about whole health and proper nutrition! However, my favorite meal is dessert! It’s all about balance, right?!

I have been very active in our local Via de Cristo, serving in various positions as I am called. I currently serve on the board of our local secretariat as Outreach Chair. I am now very honored to be asked to fulfill the roll of VP of Outreach for our National Secretariat, which I graciously accept! Through Christ’s strength and guidance, I will do my best!

My husband and I worship at Concordia Lutheran Church in San Antonio, where I grew up. I attended college in New Mexico where I met my future husband. I have been very active in our local Via de Cristo and served in all positions on our weekends and on our local Executive Board within our Secretariat. I have also been blessed to serve on a few Kiaros weekends, which were indescribably rewarding.

Most recently I was honored and blessed to serve as the NLS Regional Coordinator for Region 3. It was a valuable experience and inspired me to continue to serve as your National Secretary.

I am a retired business owner of 15 years from a successful Event Management and Planning Company. Even though I am retired, I will also create and redesign furniture in my spare time.

I loved to travel, hike and antique/junk shop.

James Ryan

DeColores, my name is Jim Ryan. I attended Indiana Men’s Via de Cristo weekend # 39 where I sat at the Table of Matthew. Today I am humbled to be allowed to serve as your National Treasurer.

As I think about it, most of my more significant life accomplishments have little to do with accounting, finance or business. They involve seeking ways and means to give back for the many blessings which have punctuated my life: my loving wife Lynn and our five living children (my three, her two), having enough freedom to seek out ministries which allow me to serve and grow in faith ever since my weekend in 2002, a loving and caring church community (Joining Hands Mission) and a Pastor who asks weekly “who is the Church?”, then sends us out with the charge “now get out there and git’er done”. My tally sheet also includes reunion brothers I love and the opportunity to serve with them and my fellow brothers and sisters in the in the greater Tampa Bay Sonbeam VdC community.

Professionally, I am about half-retired from a career providing audit and litigation support services through a financial consulting firm which represents the Insurance Regulatory community. I often joke that working with numbers is easy, but I accept your commission with both a humility for being able to serve God in this role as well as an appreciation of the fiduciary mantle you have placed on my shoulders. With Christ’s help I will strive to be a faithful steward of the NLS treasury and justify the confidence you have shown me through my selection.

God Loves You and So Do I!

Web / AV Coordinator

I attend Good Shepherd Lutheran Church In Sandy, UT. I entered the Via De Cristo community in 1996 weekend #3 here in Utah. I don’t recall the table I sat at, but I do remember that the weekend was staffed by mostly Minnesota VDC members.

My wife Ruth and I have been married for 29 years, have two children and have been member of Good Shepherd since we moved to Utah in 1987.

I am a graduate of the South Dakota School of Mines with degrees in electrical engineering and in computer science. I enjoy riding my motorcycle with my wife, taking photos and spending time with our grandson Ryder.

Since my weekend, I have worked numerous weekends serving in positions from Rector of Palanca chapel to Rector for the weekend. For the past 12 years it has been my privileged to take the group photo of weekenders and teams.

Three years ago at the national convention in Florida, I began discussion with Pastor Larry about taking over the National web site. At that time I wasn’t quite ready to handle it on my own. Although I do have quite a bit of web site back ground, I didn’t feel I was ready to take on the challenge. This past year, after much prayer and discussion with my wife, I decided I would offer my services to the community. I look forward to serving the community and I hope to be able to continue the quality of web site support that Pastor Larry has started.

I welcome any and all suggestions as to how we can improve the site. If you would like to contact me, you can email me at: rjhanzlik@gmail.com
